Residents need to get active in their communities

TOGETHER: Clrs Malcolm Maifala and Phillip de Lange at the ward meeting on Thursday, May 18.

ACTIVE citizenship and residents’ involvement in their community were the order of the day during the ward 38 community meeting at Bracken Park Hall on May 18.

Clr Phillip de Lange, leader of the official opposition in council, spoke about how councillors are relentlessly fighting for a more efficient and caring government.

Clr Malcolm Maifala spoke about his journey as a councillor. He said he took office in August 2016 and by this time last year his main focus was preparing for the elections.

“One of the key focus points I have always had in mind was to encourage active citizenship, something which I believe will take a considerable effort from everyone,” he said.

“When I speak of active citizenship, it does not mean I do not want to do anything; if anything, it means I believe by working together we can surely achieve the results needed to ensure an effective and safer ward we can be proud of,” said Maifala.

OPENING: Michael Basch opens the meeting and welcomes everyone.

He said he sees his role as representing every resident, whether they voted or not. Every resident is protected by the constitution; they also pay rates and taxes, he said

“The reality is that lack of service delivery in the ward is compromised by the lack of political will; however, that does not mean we have no hope. As a resident you can be assured that hope lies in the activity of the ward councillor, the ward committee, community structures such as residents’ associations, the CPF and Afriforum,” he said.

Maifala was happy to announce that the refurbishment work on the Brackenhurst Clinic and the Brackenhurst Library was expected to start soon and also made mention of the urgency for the sewer system to be upgraded.

Residents in ward 38 are welcome to contact Maifala with their problems and enquiries on 084 020 7479.
