Next to oxygen, water is the biggest resource every human being needs. This precious commodity has been an issue of contention around the world where 2.5 billion people still do not have adequate water sanitation.

It’s World Water Day and these startling water truths are bound to make you a little bit more water conscious, especially in light of South Africa’s current water crisis.

1. 98% of water-related deaths occur in the developing world.

2.  Coal plants use as much water as 1 billion people and consumption is set to double.

3. It requires at least 15.500 liters of water to produce 1 kilo of beef.

4. 2.5 billion people do not use an improved sanitation facility.

5. Every hour 38 workers die from water-related diseases.

6.  In Sub-Saharan African, only 61 percent of people have access to safe water.

7. Many Indian cities are unable to meet their daily water demands.

8. India’s water reservoirs contain only 29% water, the lowest in a decade.

9. By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in areas hit by water scarcity.

10. In South Africa, 1.4 million children live in homes with no safe water supply.
