Mixed results for President in finals

PRESIDENT High School had mixed results in the Golden Lions finals, which took place on Saturday, July 23, at Hoërskool Alberton.

Three teams made the final and the u.14s played against Alberton High School.

President High School u.16 team faced Allen Glen, while the First XV came up against Carltonville.

President High’s first team made the school proud when they won a very tight battle. Over the years the school has reached three out of four finals, which is a remarkable achievement.

The u.16 team lost 38-5 against Allen Glen, while the u.14s went down 35-7 against Alberton High.

The first XV had a real battle on their hands and both teams played really hard rugby, although, at times, there were a lot of mistakes from both sides.

Carltonville had the best start and, by half time, they were 7-0 ahead due to a converted try.

During the first half Pressies looked out of sorts and nervous, but one had the feeling that the character in this team was such that they were always going to bounce back. What was said to them at half time made them turn around the boards and they came out strorming, to take on the second half.

Nonetheless they were a different team after the break and struck early in the second half, with a try by replacement winger Tyrell Charlies, which was converted by Donavan du Toit to level up the scores.

President High School always looked like they had a chance after that. They did add a penalty to take the lead halfway through the second half and, despite a yellow card shortly thereafter, hung on bravely for the win.

The u.14 and u.16 teams then went to the play-offs for a chance to go through to the quarter-finals of the Beeld Trophy. The u.14 team won 50-5 against Steelcrest High School from Middelburg. The u.16 team won with 22-19 against High School Kriel, in Kriel.

The result meant that Pressies not only had three teams in the Golden Lions finals, but three teams in the quarter-finals of the Beeld Trophy, as well.

They played at the following venues against the following teams:

U.14 against High School Parys in Parys

U.16 against High School Voortrekker in Boksburg

First team against High School Zeerust in Zeerust

Unfortunately, they went down in all three matches, but they can certainly hold their heads up high.

Well done to all involved at Pressies.
