Dedicated teacher retires

FAREWELL: Margred Smuts (60) has retired after 41 years of teaching.

STONERIDGE Primary’s Margred Smuts (60) has retired after 41 years of teaching.

“I would like to praise and thank the Lord God Almighty, because whatever I achieved is through His wonderful love and mercy,” said Smuts at her farewell function on Friday, March 24.

The farewell function was attended by old and new teachers of Stoneridge Primary.

Smuts was born in 1957 in Upington into a family of 10 children.

She matriculated from Carlton Van Heerden High School and went on to Worcester to study her two-year lower primary teaching course.

In January 1976 she started teaching in Upington at Vooruitsig Primary.

In 1979 she started at Eden Park Primary and in 1982, began teaching at Stoneridge Primary, where she taught happily for the next 35 years.

“After 41 years of dedicated, committed and loyal service to the learners of the schools I taught at, it is now time to say goodbye,” she said tearfully. “My years were filled with joy and happiness. I would like to wish my colleagues everything of the best and that they continue working to improve the lives of the learners. They must remember to work together and love one another as God loves us.

“A big thank you to Principal Richard Carelse and Johannes Slambert, who assisted me whenever I had to go to the district offices. May the Lord bless you abundantly,” said Smuts.

Smuts is planning to go back home to Upington to take care of her sick mother and spend the last few years with her.
