Rescue team hailed for achievements

GREAT WORK: The team made history by becoming the only urban search and rescue team in South Africa to meet the high international standards.

THE Urban Search and Rescue South Africa (USAR-SA) team members were awarded certificates of participation and achievement in an urban search and rescue exercise that was held in Johannesburg in February under the auspices of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) .

The team is under the leadership of City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services chief fire officer Tshepo Makola and Dr Elias Sithole, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Centre.

They showed their appreciation to all team members present for the dedication shown in overcoming all the challenges and achieving international status.

“It was difficult in the beginning, but we all managed to reach our intended objective. I am proud to be part of this dedicated rescue team. We started small but achieved great heights in no time. Hard work starts now and no more turning back thereafter,” said Makola.

The team made history by becoming the only urban search and rescue team in South Africa to meet the high standards set by the INSARAG. It is the second country in Africa to achieve such status.

Special insignias were given to the hardworking team management for the tireless devotion and commitment to bring the team together, while words of appreciation were directed towards the team members.
