Alberton Rugby Club beats Soweto

SCRUM SUCCESS: Alberton win another scrum.

ALBERTON Rugby Club notched up an impressive victory against Soweto recently on Friday, June 30 when the two teams took each other on at the Alberton pitch.

The hosts, who lead 33-3 at the break, eventually triumphed 50-8.

Alberton was superior in all facets of the game from the get go. The first noticeable difference in the sides was the size difference. It was quite noticeable from the beginning that the visitors were always going to be outgunned due to this.

Naturally, the scrums were dominated by Alberton. They scrummed well and put a lot of pressure on the opposition.

Soweto must be complimented on one aspect though – they never scrummed negatively by collapsing the scrums or ‘popping out of the scrums’. In fact, they did get a bit of possession out of the scrums by getting the ball back out quickly on their put in.

The one facet where they fared better was in the rucks. They won the odd turnover here and there, as was their clear intention, they never resorted to repeating infringements or negative play.

GOOD KICK: Alberton adds points with another secure kick through the up-rights.

Alberton managed to score from all positions and types of play including a super impressive try from a 5m lineout. The old saying goes that you only play as well as the opposition allow you to, but you still have to do the basics correctly. This the home side did well.

Just before half time, the Alberton coach commented that the most pleasing thing about the Alberton performance was the fact that they were keeping their structures. It would have been easy to get carried away and just go helter-skelter. They were very direct but also did not let the game become loose.

Soweto did manage to hold onto the ball when they had the opportunity to attack although the Alberton defence was like a brick wall.

It would be easy for Soweto to, and they could have been forgiven if they had, let their heads drop but the spirit they showed while struggling was good to watch. Even mini victories like a great tackle where a knock on was forced were celebrated with high fives all round.

There were also no incidents of fighting which show that they came to play rugby. A winning team rarely starts a fight. It is usually the team that is under pressure that gets frustrated.

All in all a super victory for the hosts but Soweto played their part and will learn from the experience gained.
