EKURHULENI Chess, together with the Mall at Newmarket, will be hosting South Africa’s largest and most prestigious rapid chess tournament in September. The tournament will attract 300 of South Africa’s best chess players from ages eight years up and until senior level. This 11-round tournament will start its first round at 6pm on September 29, followed by three rounds on the night. Round five will start at 9am on September 30. Round 11 should finish around 3pm, followed by a prize giving ceremony.
Part of the prize giving will be the handover of Ekurhuleni provincial colours to players who made the provincial side and who will represent the region at the South African Junior National Championships. Indeed, it will be a very prestigious occasion.
An influx of over 1 000 additional people are expected during the duration of the tournament and the restaurant area of the mall is expected to be jam-packed with players, spectators, parents and interested shoppers.
Ekurhuleni Chess has pledged a prize fund in excess of R30 000 to ensure the best players in South Africa and neighbouring countries are attracted. Commitment from several international chess masters to attend and play in the tournament has been established.
Ekurhuleni Chess invites tenants and companies to help sponsor prizes. “We are handing out category prizes for age groups and woman players together with overall prizes. Prizes will be cash as well as gifts,” said Norman Collier, president of the Ekurhuleni Chess Association.
“The event is currently being advertised nationally on various platforms, from official formal platforms including social media. A visibility in excess of 15 000 per month is currently being achieved just on the Ekurhuleni and Chessa website,” added Collier.
