Online advert leads to arrest

TWO murder and hijacking suspects have been arrested after posting the stolen goods on Gumtree.

On October 4, two men, 30 and 36 years of age respectively, were arrested after a sting operation where a police officer acted as a buyer.

The driver of a truck and trailer was murdered and the truck and trailer stolen in Ikageng, North West earlier this year (May). After browsing Gumtree ads, the owner of the trailer recognised it as one of those for sale.

“The owner alerted the police, who arranged to meet with the sellers in Vereeniging. Preliminary investigations revealed that the trailer, worth R660 000, was indeed the one that had been stolen.

During the arrest, police also seized a Nissan Navara that is suspected to have been used in the commission of the crime. Police are still in search of the truck.

“Police would like to advise the community to be extra careful when purchasing second-hand goods because they might be stolen, and that can get buyers into trouble,” says Captain Mavela Masondo, provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Gauteng.

The arrested suspects will be appearing in Gauteng and North West magistrate’s courts in due course.
