Aspirant writers to honour Mandela

THE former president of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, would have turned 100 years old this year.

With this in mind, Ward 38 councillor Malcolm Maifala has partnered with Brackenhurst Library to host the inaugural Nelson Mandela Creative Writing Competition.

“As the ward councillor, I have always believed when celebrating the life of the former president on Mandela Day, it needed to be done in a more meaningful manner,” Maifala said. “While it was good to be involved in the clean-up on Mandela Day last year, the aim this year is to help the youth have a greater appreciation of the legacy of the late international icon.”

The competition will be officially launched with a call for entries on Thursday, March 1.

“On the day of the launch, the plan will be communicated with stakeholders and potential writers who live close to the following libraries: Brackenhurst Library, Alberton Library, Thokoza Library, Eden Park Library, Palm Ridge Library and the two libraries in Katlehong,” Maifala said.

The competition is open to youth between the ages of 12 and 25 who have access to the above-mentioned libraries. The theme of the competition this year is ‘In the Eyes of Madiba’, to encourage writers to try and tell a story of what Madiba’s vision was for South Africa and the world.

Full details of the competition will be made available at the launch.

“I would therefore like to urge schools and educators in the area to encourage learners to take part in this initiative, where reading and writing will be encouraged,” Maifala concluded.
