UPDATE: Police confirm robber not armed with firearm

IN response to the robbery that occurred at Eden Park Police Station the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng has sanctioned an urgent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“While we are relieved that none of our members was injured during the armed robbery, it would also be important for us to establish the rationale behind their reaction/response during the commission of the crime,” said Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Gauteng.

Preliminary reports, as released by the police, indicate that two unknown males, one allegedly armed, entered the Client Service Centre. The suspects ordered the members on duty to hand over the keys to the safe. After the incident, one R-5 Rifle and two empty magazines are confirmed as missing.

“I can only confirm that it is alleged that one suspect was armed with a weapon other than a firearm,” Brigadier Mathapelo Peter, the Provincial Police spokesperson said when asked about allegations that the suspect in question was armed with a knife.

The suspects are alleged to have taken off in a white bakkie with a canopy.

Police are subsequently appealing to members of the public to strengthen the partnership with law enforcement bodies in the fight against crime. Community members are also encouraged to come forward with information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the suspects who continue to undermine the law and the authority of the State.

People with information about this robbery are urged to contact Eden Park SAPS on 011 385 2988 or your nearest police station or phone the crime stop number 08600 10111.
