GALLERY: Healthier winter comfort snacks

BACON-WRAPPED BRUSSELS SPROUTS: Preheat the oven to 200°C. Season some brussels sprouts with salt, pepper and thyme. Wrap each sprout in a very thin slice of bacon and set these on a baking-sheet-covered wire rack in the oven. Bake them for 45 minutes, flipping them halfway through. When the bacon is crispy, remove them and let them cool. Serve with your favourite dipping sauce.

WE know there’s nothing quite as delicious as fat-sugar-and-carb-filled comfort food during winter (or any time of the year, for that matter), but we do know that is not a good option for those who are watching their weight or trying to follow a healthy lifestyle. Here are five healthier snack options to get you through your snacky days.

RADISHES AND PEANUT BUTTER: Use mild cherry belle radishes (those tiny, softer, red ones) and whip some all-natural peanut butter together with unsalted butter in a 1:1 ratio. Dip the radishes in this mix and garnish with a little bit of coarse sea salt. Enjoy a flavoursome snack! (Image: www.marthastewart.com)

REINVENTED PB & J: Spread all-natural (no added sugar, salt or oil) peanut or almond butter on wholegrain bread or apple slices. Sweeten it with a drizzle of honey or slices of strawberry. Don’t use too much bread, peanut butter or honey as it’s still quite high in calories. (Image: www.mariamarlowe.com)

SALT AND VINEGAR BABY MARROW CHIPS: Slice some baby marrows into very thin rounds (as thin as possible). Mix some oil and vinegar together, drizzle this over the rounds and mix it well in a bowl. Spread the slices apart onto an oven pan and sprinkle with course sea salt. Grill it in the oven on medium heat until the rounds are crispy. (Image: www.sugarfreemom.com)

FRUITY COMFORT SMOOTHIE: Blend together a cup of fat free or low fat milk, half a cup of strawberries, a banana, a teaspoon of cacao powder, a tablespoon of peanut butter and a cup of crushed ice in a smoothie maker. Enjoy the creamy, fruity goodness. (Image: www.recipetips.com)
