The Listeriosis Outbreak is officially over, South Africans rejoice

Motsoaledi briefed the media at the National Health Laboratory Service in Sandringham about the country’s efforts to end the outbreak of Listeriosis. In March this year, the Minister held a press conference to inform the public that they would be recalling processed food from Rainbow Chicken and Enterprise Polokwane Factory after more than 16 environmental samples tested positive for the listeriosis monocytogenes strain ST 6.

Subsequently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) increased its technical support to South Africa in April to help contain the outbreak, strengthen support and prevent future outbreaks. This support by WHO is in line with international health regulations. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) was pivotal in assisting with their emergency response plan to control and end the outbreak as well as strengthen systems to prevent further Listeriosis outbreaks.

The Minister said that at the beginning of the outbreak scientists said that it would be difficult to find the source but they managed to trace it.

To date, R12 million was spent during the response period to deal with the Listeriosis outbreak.

The Minister then turned his attention to address concerns and reports of fake food and expired food being sold to people. He said that the department has alerted municipalities to conduct inspections on fake food.

Here is how South Africans responded to the news that the Listeriosis Outbreak is over:
